Cellphone Crime Scene Photography Course for Patrol Officers July 28th – 29th, 2025- Reserve Seat – (Provo, Utah)

July 28-29th, 2025 Cellphone Crime Scene Photography Course for the Patrol Officer.

*** This course is geared toward patrol officers, new investigators, and officers wanting to transition into investigations ***

Provo City Police Department is pleased to host the Cellphone Crime Scene Photography Course for the Patrol Officer with Castle Forensic Photography in July 2025.  The instructor, Provo Police Master Officer Gary Carter (CPP), is a 26-year law enforcement veteran whose experience runs the gamut of law enforcement assignments, to include criminal investigations (both as a detective and a supervisor) and crime scene processing, as well as instructor assignments in multiple disciplines. Gary has been a professional photographer for over eight years, is currently a member of the Professional Photographers of America, and has his Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) certificate.

Recognizing the lack of local offerings for comprehensive crime scene photography training for law enforcement officers, Gary has spent hundreds of hours developing this law enforcement photography course, drawing from both his 26-year law enforcement career and his experience as a professional photographer.  Topics covered in this two-day training include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Basic Cellphone Photography fundamentals
    • Principles behind how a cellphone camera works
    • How to operate a camera effectively
  • Photographing Traffic Accidents
  • Photographing Injuries and Bodies
  • Metadata
  • Overcoming challenging situations using knowledge-based problem solving
  • Proper photographing of a crime scene
  • Proper Technique for photographing examination evidence
  • Case laws involving photography
  • Court preparation and admissibility

These skills will be taught both in a classroom setting and with practical exercises, documenting mock crime scenes.

"I came into this course sort of knowing my way around my camera. Upon finishing the course, I now feel like I could respond to a crime scene and perfectly photograph anything and everything, in manual mode at that! This is a great course for becoming confident in your photography skills and a great refresher for those that already have a good grasp." -H. Matter
