Cellphone Crime Scene Photography for the Patrol Officer Course June 22nd – 23rd, 2026- Reserve Seat – (Provo, Utah)

June 22nd – 23rd, 2026 Cell Phone Crime Scene Photography For the Patrol Officer Course.

*** No previous photography experience is required to attend this course. ***

Provo City Police Department is pleased to host a Cellphone Crime Scene Photography Course with Castle Forensic Photography in June 2026.  The instructor, Provo Police Master Officer Gary Carter (CPP), is a 27-year law enforcement veteran whose experience runs the gamut of law enforcement assignments, to include criminal investigations (both as a detective and a supervisor) and crime scene processing, as well as instructor assignments in multiple disciplines. Gary has been a professional photographer for over ten years, and is recognized as a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) through the Professional Photographers of America..

Recognizing the lack of local offerings for comprehensive crime scene photography training for law enforcement officers, Gary has spent hundreds of hours developing this law enforcement photography course, drawing from both his 27-year law enforcement career and his experience as a professional photographer.  Topics covered in this two-day training include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Crime Scene Photography fundamentals and advanced techniques
    • Better photos from minor traffic accidents to major scenes
    • Learn to properly photography any crime scene
  • Unlock the power and avoid the pitfalls of mobile phone cameras
  • Metadata
  • Increase conviction rates and evidence quality
  • Prepare officers to become investigators
  • Case laws involving photography
  • Court preparation and admissibility

This 20 hour course has been designed for both new officers and officers with an interest in investigations. This course is also valuable for experienced investigators from agencies who don’t use DSLR or mirrorless cameras.

These skills will be taught both in a classroom setting and with practical exercises, documenting mock crime scenes.

"I came into this course sort of knowing my way around my camera. Upon finishing the course, I now feel like I could respond to a crime scene and perfectly photograph anything and everything, in manual mode at that! This is a great course for becoming confident in your photography skills and a great refresher for those that already have a good grasp." -H. Matter
